Steven Mantle Rumberg, a beloved husband, father, son and brother passed away on March 23, 2026 at the age of 55. He was born on August 14, 1970 in Youngstown, Ohio and lived in Loveland, Ohio for the past 30 years.
Throughout his almost 4 year journey with ALS, Steve maintained a positive attitude and sense of humor. Even when his body failed him and he could no longer speak, he made his family and aides laugh. Steve had a lot of gratitude for the support that his family received in so many ways.
He leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Orly Rumberg, his children Eliana and Olam, his mom, Marilyn Wagmiller, brother John (Kelly) Rumberg and his nephews (Robert, Fritz, John, Carl and Todd).
Steve met his wife, Orly, in 1989 at Case Western Reserve University where he received a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Management. Together they traveled to 16 countries, most recently Israel, Greece and Iceland. They enjoyed scuba diving together in exotic locations around the world. When twins, Eliana & Olam were born, the family went on Rumberg Family Adventures on the weekends to zoos, aquariums, science centers and museums in different cities and the twins got their first passport when they were 9 months old.
Steve liked to surprise Orly with creative and thoughtful gifts – the most notable being installing a hammock in the basement for Orly’s birthday complete with 1,000 pounds of sand underneath the hammock and palm leaves hanging overhead from the rafters. He also liked to surprise her with fresh flowers – purple roses were his favorite.
Sports was a constant theme in Steve’s life. He played baseball and football in his youth and as an adult enjoyed playing sand volleyball with Eliana and coaching girls’ volleyball at the elementary school level. He was a lifelong Pittsburg Steeler’s fan and wore his Jack Lambert jersey with pride.
Community service was another theme in his life. In college, he served as the Community Service Chair for his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, and went on to participate in many community service projects. He served as a board member and President of the National Association for Disorder of the Corpus Callosum for many years where the Rumberg family created the Olam’s Piggybank fund. Soon after his ALS diagnosis, Steve and Orly created the non-profit Pals for pALS with a mission of supporting the ALS community in the Greater Cincinnati Area.
Steve was a man of many talents. He baked an award-winning key lime cheesecake, made pumpkin pie straight from a pumpkin, built beautiful furniture in his garage woodshop, built a unique pirate themed play area in the basement, created elaborate Halloween decorations with his 3-D printer and robotics knowledge, maintained saltwater aquariums, and enjoyed working on puzzles and finding geocaches with Eliana.
Most of all, Steve loved being a dad to Eliana and Olam and he was all in when he engaged in an activity with them. When Eliana showed an interest in astronomy, he bought a telescope and they got involved with the Cincinnati Observatory. When he saw that Olam loved to attend baseball games, Steve traveled with Olam to watch baseball games in 25 of the 30 Major League stadiums and many minor league stadiums.
Steve’s passing leaves a giant hole in our hearts and a hope that a cure for ALS will be discovered soon to give other families hope when they receive an ALS diagnosis.
