Spotlight on Board Member Layton Shaffner

Compiled by Miriam Bernard

This month we are thrilled to introduce our community to one of the valuable members of our NODCC Board, Layton Shaffner. Layton brings both personal passion and professional expertise to the organization, and we are excited to share his contributions with our NODCC family.

Layton Shaffner, a Dallas, Texas native, has been connected to the NODCC since 2011, some time after learning of his son Logan’s ACC diagnosis. Then their family attended the 2012 conference in San Antonio, and the rest is history! Year after year, the experience of meeting other families and learning more about the organization deepened his commitment, ultimately inspiring him to join the NODCC Board in the year 2020.

When asked what motivated him to take on a leadership role, Layton recalls meeting many board members at conferences over the years and being impressed by the organization’s dedication to its members. “Given my IT background, I knew I could help, especially with revamping systems like the NODCC website,” he explains. That technical expertise is now being put to good use as we launch our brand new website, an initiative Layton is particularly excited to see come to life.

Layton’s 15-year-old son, Logan, has ACC, so his experience of navigating myriad information and resources out there has had a hand in driving his passion for expanding the organization’s reach, creating stronger support networks, and increasing public awareness about ACC and related disorders.

When reflecting on his time on the board, Layton says his favorite part is seeing the tangible impact the NODCC makes in people’s lives. “The organization creates connections, provides resources, and advocates for inclusion, understanding, and lifelong support,” he shares. While he does not single out one specific highlight, he notes that the NODCC conference is a cherished tradition for his family, offering the opportunity to connect with others from across the country.

For those considering getting involved with the NODCC, Layton offers this advice: “Reach out to others in your area or who have children the same age as yours to build a support system.” This is something many parents have found to be hugely beneficial to their families. His goals for the future include leveraging the new website to expand the organization’s visibility and helping individuals, families, professionals, and researchers learn more about both the NODCC and disorders of the corpus callosum.

Layton and the rest of the NODCC leadership team invite you to pop over to our new website, which is now live at https://nodcc.org/ (same web address as always), and browse the many informative and inspirational new components of our site. It has been a labor of love!

In his spare time, Layton enjoys spending time with friends and family, cheering on his kids at their various sporting events, swimming to stay in shape, and traveling across the United States and abroad whenever possible.

Thank you, Layton, for your commitment to the NODCC board, and we’re so grateful for the passion and expertise you bring to our leadership team!
