Helping Others Understand Your Child

Parenting a child with DCC comes with unique joys and challenges, and introducing them to new teachers or professionals can feel overwhelming. This resource section is here to help! We’ve put together suggestions for creating a personalized information packet to share with educators and treatment providers.

Feel free to use and adapt these resources in a way that best supports your child’s needs.

Education

The educational needs of children with disorders of the corpus callosum vary significantly, but the goals that each has are similar. These children want to be stimulated in creative, hands-on learning environments, in which unique learning styles are embraced and acceptance of cognitive differences are the norm.

Each child with a DCC comes to the classroom with varying degrees of neurological and developmental challenges and strengths. This diversity makes research on educational strategies very difficult. To date there are no experimentally controlled studies of academic interventions specifically for DCC. However, thanks to the contributions from NODCC members and knowledge from research with children who have similar behaviors, we have gathered a collection of tools to support effective communication between parents and the classroom teacher.

Introducing … my child!

An Introduction Folder is an effective and efficient tool to help educators and professionals understand your child and his or her diagnosis. It can include information about his or her personality, likes and dislikes, educational accomplishments, educational goals, primary concerns, and critical information for daily functioning. It should also include recommendations for maximizing your child’s performance and handling behavioral challenges. By using a folder, you have a flexible tool that can easily be updated as your child grows and amended to meet the needs of various situations. Introduction Folders can be helpful for teachers and school administrators, as well as therapists (OT, PT, Speech), Scout Troop leaders, church-school teachers, and anyone else.
